Alicia Keys ranks among the most successful female R&B artists today, but also deservedly stands apart thanks to the versatility and unique character she brings to her material. The 27-year-old New York native dished out a rich evening of soul Friday at theFoxwoods Resort Casino’s MGM Grand Theater in Mashantucket, a show that highlighted her chops as a singer and the musical range with which she backs them up. Backed by a seven-piece band and three singers, the 11-time Grammy winner dove into a lineup of stout grooves the likes of her opener, “Go Ahead,” and worked out the funk-lined tune’s lyrics with a precision that was cool but never cold. Her singing was lean and economical, a sweet sparrow song in a musical landscape that more typically favors showy squawks, as she immersed herself in the grabby flow of “You Don’t Know My Name.” (Full Story) |

R&B singer Alicia Keys and Jack White of the White Stripes were to film the video for the new James Bond theme song in Toronto this weekend. Keys was at the Toronto International Film Festival promoting her new film “The Secret Life of Bees” while White was there with “It Might Get Loud,” a documentary on the electric guitar. Producers of the upcoming Bond flick, “Quantum of Solace,” say White wrote and produced the new theme song, “Another Way To Die,” and plays drums on it. He also joins Keys on the vocal tracks for the tune, which is the first duet to be chosen as a Bond theme. “It feels very Bond, really brash and hard and super cool. It has a lot of valleys and peaks in it. That’s what I love about it,” Keys said in an interview at the festival. “It was great to work with Jack White. I’ve always been a big fan of the White Stripes and so for us to kind of combine this kind of rock and soul feeling, it was a lot of fun.” “Quantum of Solace,” starring Daniel Craig as slick agent 007, lands in theatres in November. |
