When we first heard Alicia Keys’ velvet voice and masterful piano strokes in 2001, she was a beautiful tomboy singing about falling in and out of love. Hers was a pure, unapologetic sound — authentic, magical, enriched by yesterday — that returned vintage soul to its place in the pantheon of music.

The WNBA’s 12th season begins Saturday and the league has scored an A-list spokeswoman: Alicia Keys. The Grammy-winning musician made a special video of her song “Superwoman” that will air before all 22 of the league’s nationally televised games on ABC and ESPN2 this summer. The video was filmed earlier this month during a concert in Anaheim, California.

The season tips off with with the defending league champion Phoenix Mercury hosting the Los Angeles Sparks (May 17, 3:30 pm/ET, ABC). ESPN2’s Tuesday-night game-of-the-week schedule begins three days later with Sacramento Monarchs visiting the refurbished Seattle Storm (May 20, 10:30 pm/ET).

Alicia Keys has reportedly landed a $25 million (GBP12.5 million) deal with U.S. drinks firm Glaceau to front a new campaign for its VitaminWater line.

From Alicia’s mom Terri: ”There was a moment between the age of 13 and 15 when she told me she just didn’t want to do anything. And she just wasn’t happy with the world. I don’t know what heaviness had come over her, with puberty and everything else. You never know. So she said, ‘Please, Mom, don’t bother me. I barely want to go to school.’ We worked it out, we talked and she got herself together and ended up graduating at age 16 as a valedictorian of her high-school class.”

Q: You had to cancel a few of those shows earlier. Is everything back to where it should be?

A: Everything is spectacular, perfect. You know I did get a little bit under the weather. It sucked. Believe me, if anybody was disappointed, it was me. It’s a terrible feeling to not be able to sing to my full capacity, but it’s very important for me to protect myself.

I’m definitely in this for the long haul, and there’s nothing I’ll do to damage my voice ever. So it was important for me to take those two and just make sure I was 100 percent instead of singing on strained cords. And now I’m back, back, back, back, back. (more…)
