I was born in 1981, about the same time as the first cases of AIDS were diagnosed. In this limited amount of time, AIDS has grown into the worst public health crisis in human history.

It’s amazing to think that all this has happened since I was a child and that myself and people younger than me have never lived in a world without this devastating disease looming over us. (more…)

Alicia Keys embarked on a journey, during the spring of 2006, which changed her life forever. During her month-long trip, Alicia witnessed countless stories of people infected with HIV who, despite the odds, were overcoming their personal hardships with astonishing bravery. Some of the communities that Alicia visited on her pilgrimage had an HIV prevalence rate of over 40%, but within such tragic circumstances she was overwhelmed with incredible accounts of resiliency and triumph.

Alicia in Africa: Journey to the Motherland is the breathtaking story of a generation that refuses to give up. Spreading the message is so important to Alicia that she is making the documentary available for FREE online. The first preview of the film will air live on American Idol’s Idol Gives Back April 9th (7:30-10pm ET/PT) on FOX. You can watch the trailer here.

Alicia Keys lent her time to AIDS education, and NYU students got a sneak peak at the film that resulted. Last night at the Kimmel Center, NYU’s chapter of the Keep A Child Alive organization previewed the unreleased documentary “Alicia in Africa: Journey to the Motherland.” In the film, Keys narrates her journey to areas of Africa devastated by AIDS. She meets people whose lives have been drastically affected by HIV/AIDS, including people who have lost children or parents and those who are infected themselves.
