The First Annual Premier’s Award was introduced at the recent Cayman Islands Jazz Fest at Camana Bay on Saturday, 5 December and honored 10 local musicians, as well as international star Alicia Keys.
The Premier’s Award acknowledges the contribution of an individual whose professional life has been dedicated to and integrated with improving the lives of others, according to the Cayman Department of Tourism, and is intended to celebrate the outstanding achievement of individuals who have shown “great talent, enthusiasm and dedication†in the areas of culture, music, literature, theatre, visual and performing arts, education or sports. “As a society, we learn much about who we are as a people through the work and talents of our Caymanian artists, performers, crafts people and sportsmen and women,†said the Premier, the Hon. McKeeva Bush, MBE. “Through their accomplishments, we are able to see many different interpretations of the world around us, and oftentimes we are stimulated, entertained and inspired as a result of their creative, artistic and musical expressions.â€
All the first-time recipients honoured are musicians, who were recognized during the 2009 Jazz Fest at Camana Bay on 5 December.
“As gifted performers and musicians, their outstanding ability and talent has earned them much respect and admiration,†said Shomari Scott, Acting Director of Tourism. “Over time, the goal of this award will be to highlight creativity and foster the development of talent, especially among the youth, within the Cayman Islands community.â€
The first recipient of the Premier’s Award is Miss Alicia Keys in recognition of her commitment and contribution to the arts and for her humanitarian work as co-founder and ambassador for the Keep a Child Alive organization. She has helped to build clinics and provide medicines for children and their families with HIV/AIDS across Africa. Her “positive outlook on life coupled with her level of public acceptance, attitude, leadership and service to humanity are exemplary,†said Mr. Scott.
