Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008Greats inspire Keys, but style is her own
Thursday, April 17th, 2008She’s the rare pop diva with substance — impossibly glamorous, yet, also an amazingly talented singer, pianist and songwriter. Alicia Keys — performing Tuesday night at the Petersen Events Center — has that elusive, incredible crossover appeal, drawing influences from the greats like Roberta Flack and Stevie Wonder, yet, keeping current enough for the MySpace generation. When Bob Dylan writes about you in a song (”Thunder on the Mountain”), you must be doing something right.
So it was surprising how laid-back and down-to-earth Keys was during a recent conference-call interview with reporters. You don’t expect diva-like attitude from her, but neither do you expect such calm, self-possessed responses to even the most personal questions, either. (more…)
Keys says she makes choices based on what she loves
Thursday, April 17th, 2008Keys says she makes choices based on what she loves When Alicia Keys performs, she usually exudes some sort of Zen-like intensity. When Keys talks, that same calm yet strong force is also apparent. The 27-year-old New Yorker, who grew up in gritty Hell’s Kitchen and started taking classical piano lessons at age 7, is readying the U.S. leg of her tour — launching Saturday in Hampton — to support her fourth album, “As I Am.” The disc, which bowed in November, has sold more than 3 million copies, including 742,000 its first week — the largest first-week sales for any female R&B artist.
Talking to a group of reporters by phone recently, the songstress-musician proved herself a bright, insightful young woman, the type who considers her answers carefully and then relays them with obvious intelligence. Among other topics, Keys discussed her recent soul-searching journey to Egypt, the future of her acting career and how she chose the opening acts for her tour. (more…)

Alicia Keys Statement Regarding Blender Magazine
Wednesday, April 16th, 2008Alicia Keys has released the following statement regarding her recent interview with Blender Magazine:
“I feel it is necessary to clarify the comments that were made during my recent Blender magazine interview since they have been misrepresented.
Anyone who knows me and my character, knows that I am not a conspiracy theorist or, by implication, a racist. My comments about ‘gangsta rap’ were in no way trying to suggest that the government is responsible for creating this genre of rap music. The point that I was trying to make was that the term was over-sloganized by some of the media causing reactions that were not always positive. Many of the ‘gangsta rap’ lyrics articulate the problems of the artists’ experiences and I think all of us, including our leaders, could be doing more to address these problems including drugs, gang violence, crime, and other related social issues.
